When I think of filmmaker Lulu Keating, I see splashes of colour—from the flaming red hair to the bright wardrobe and warm Antigonish, Nova Scotia accent—she’s truly unforgettable and a tsunami of creativity. The award winning writer/director calls Dawson City, Yukon her home, and it’s there she finds inspiration for such shorts as Her Man Plan and Dawson Town Melted Down. Between her narrative films and documentaries, Lulu’s work has screened internationally for years and her most recent feature film, Lucille’s Ball (which runs at Vancouver’s Rio Theatre Nov. 23), unravels a signature style—highly stylized, innovative work that pushes the bounds of cinematography to a new realm.  Continue reading

From Our Dark Side genre contest holds information session in Winnipeg Thursday Nov. 13

DarkSide-website_0000_headerWinnipeg writers are invited to attend an information session on WIFTV’s genre contest From Our Dark Side from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 13 at the National Film Board, 145 McDermott Ave. in Winnipeg. The information session is hosted by the National Screen Institute and the National Film Board, North West Centre.

From Our Dark Side contest producer Sharon McGowan and mentor Karen Lam will tune in from Vancouver to describe the program.

Sharon McGowan will discuss the contest guidelines and the tropes of Genre Film (sci-fi, thriller, fantasy and horror, or any combination of these).

Karen Lam will also screen one of her short films and take participants through the creative process she utilizes when developing Genre Film concepts with a strong female edge.

Have your questions prepared, as Sharon and Karen will Q&A with the audience.
